Ciena’s Waveserver DCI platform extends connectivity and offers up to 100Gb per port

Equinix, the global interconnection and data center company, will launch a new interconnect architecture at its new data center (SP3), in Santana de Parnaíba, SP. The Metro Connect will link IBXs SP2, in Tamboré, to SP3, in Santana de Parnaíba, enabling high-density connections with lower transmission costs. The new model will be supported by Ciena’s Waveserver, a scalable Data Center Interconnection (DCI) platform, enabling capacity for up to 400 Gb/s in a compact 1-Rack-Unit system.

“Our data centers in the country are all networked, but this will be the first to support up to 100 Gb/s per port,” said Nelson Mendonça, Operations Director at Equinix in Brazil. “In traditional models, we offer interconnection with billing based on capacity. Now, between SP2 and SP3, we have all the potential of the new architecture at our disposal, which allows us to develop a new purchase model, improve the end user experience, and ensure a connection with more capacity for customers allocated in our data centers.”

This is the first time that Ciena, a network strategy and technology company, will commercially deploy its Waveserver DCI platform in Latin America, which will allow Equinix to offer 10, 40, and 100 Gb/s ports in its interconnect portfolio. The low transmission cost will facilitate not only the expansion of customers between the data centers, but also the connections between enterprises allocated in different sites. In addition, companies hosted in SP3 may connect to the Equinix Cloud Exchange, a hub for interconnection with the company’s cloud, with no linking cost.

“With Waveserver, Equinix can make more efficient use of its data center footprint, while offering new levels of flexibility due to Waveserver’s openness and high programmability that ensures quick and simple service activation and monitoring”, explains Patricia Vello, Country Manager for Brazil at Ciena.

The new technology allows Equinix to provide two possible protection levels: Protected and Redundant. The first allows connection through completely different routes, with automatic migration to a secondary path in case of outage, requiring only a port at each end of the system. The Redundant option also offers different routes, but with two ports at each end. This way, if one of the equipment fails, there is a second option, thus ensuring greater availability.

The service will be available in the first quarter of 2017, with the opening of the new data center in Santana do Parnaíba. In the long term, the company intends to expand this network architecture to its other data centers in Brazil.
