This paper explores 25 gigabit symmetric PON (25GS-PON) as the broad-scale intercept for PON in cable. 25GS-PON meets key requirements of a successful cable solution: It can coexist in a brownfield multi-technology access network; reuse existing distributed access architecture (DAA) backhaul infrastructure; anticipate demand; check competitive threats; exhibit low-cost, low-power optical network unit (ONU) cost structures; and facilitate a smooth network transition.
