Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Takeback and Recycling Program
Ciena is committed to environmentally responsible behavior. As part of this commitment, we continually work to comply with environmental legislation such as the European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2012/19/EU, national regulations as applicable, and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2011/65/EU with associated amendments. The WEEE Directive was adopted on July 4, 2012, and aims to reduce the environmental impact of e-waste by promoting its proper collection, treatment, recycling, and disposal.
Numerous countries located outside of Europe, including those in the Asia-Pacific region, North and South America, and the Middle East, have implemented or are developing product-specific legislation that imposes varying degrees of restrictions. Ciena monitors this progress and is compliant with all regional product legislation where Ciena products are supplied.
Ciena joins approved compliance organizations to meet its collection and take-back obligations. In the countries where we do business, Ciena works with partners—such as approved authorized treatment facilities (AATFs)—to provide our Takeback and Recycling Program for products covered by WEEE legislation and national regulations. This program provides customers a means to properly dispose of Ciena products at the end of their useful life as required by applicable regulatory or contractual obligations. Only products falling within the scope of the EU WEEE Directive and national regulations are accepted unless preapproval is obtained.
In addition, Ciena supports customers wanting to reuse or recycle Ciena products that have reached the end of their useful life. To obtain a quote for this service, please contact your sales representative or program manager.
Ciena is committed to environmental stewardship through the principles of the circular economy, and the Takeback and Recycling Program includes, where possible:
- Reuse of used systems
- Repurpose of components and subassemblies
When systems cannot be refurbished for reuse or repurpose, we use partners that arrange for recycling of material, reducing landfilling and adverse environmental impacts. Sustainable disposal processes comply with all environmental and data security legislation. See below for disassembly instructions.
