Demonstrates highest 800G pluggable performance with WaveLogic 6 Nano

Ciena’s (NYSE: CIEN) optical and routing and switching innovations will once again support the SCinet network at SC25, taking place November 16–21 at the America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis. At the event, Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Nano 800G coherent pluggable transceivers, hosted on a third-party switch, will transmit interoperable 800Gb/s over 1,050 km, from the exhibition floor to Chicago and back. This is the longest 800Gb/s transmission demonstrated using a pluggable, highlighting the company’s continued market leadership in optical innovation.

Additionally, Ciena will feature demos of scalable and sustainable solutions for scientific research and discovery networks for SCinet and in booth #3330.

“ESnet deployed Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme to provide record-setting speeds on the SCinet network, efficiently delivering 1.2 Tbps of traffic from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in Berkeley, California, to the St. Louis Convention Center. A span of over 2,000km,” said Inder Monga, Executive Director, ESnet.

Ciena’s SC25 Highlights:

  • SCinet Connectivity: Ciena will transport eight 400GbE circuits across 529km from the Starlight Exchange in Chicago to SC25 using its Waveserver platform, powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent transceivers running at 1.6Tb/s, as well as its 8190 Coherent Router, powered by WaveLogic 5 Nano 400Gb/s coherent pluggables. Ciena’s 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) will serve as the photonic layer to extend all Ciena and third-party wavelengths from the Internet2 backbone into the convention center. In addition, a Ciena Waveserver housing WL6e submarine transceivers will be used to transport an 800G circuit over 10,000 km between São Paulo and Miami, enabling SCinet to support key science demonstrations with South American research and education (R&E) networks.
  • Ciena Booth #3330: Ciena’s Traveling FABRIC Node (tfNode) will be featured as part of the SCinet network and hosted in booth #3330. The tfNode provides high-speed connectivity, delivering compute and R&E routed connectivity at 400Gb/s, making it possible for researchers and experimenters to conduct large-scale projects. Nine network research exhibitions (NREs) from institutions including Caltech, ESnet, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and University of California San Diego will utilize tfNode resources for demos, including high-speed connectivity and compute resources.
  • University of Amsterdam (UvA): UvA will be conducting demonstrations that run on FABRIC, the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Adaptive Programmable Research Infrastructure for Computer Science and Science Applications, internationally connected platform located in the Ciena Booth. These demonstrations will show how privacy-preserving orchestration and policy driver data sharing lead to higher SLA (Subscriber Agreement) compliance and enhanced federated Machine Learning computations.
  • Speaking Session: November 16 at 3:30 pm: International Workshop on Innovating the Network for Data-Intensive Science (INDIS) talk: The quest for high capacity, long reach, industrial strength networks, featuring Rod Wilson, Chief Technologist of Research Networks, Ciena.

In addition to supporting the diverse SC Conference and SCinet communities across the technical computing industry, Ciena has a long history of empowering high-speed R&E networks to push the boundaries of scientific research and collaboration, where high performance computing is a primary driver of bandwidth.
