Ciena Names Joe Cumello Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications
Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) has promoted Joe Cumello to Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Marketing and Communications. Joining President and CEO Gary Smith’s direct leadership team, Cumello assumes responsibility for harmonizing the company’s messaging platform, advancing its brand and driving engagement with key stakeholders, including customers, partners and employees.
Cumello has served as Ciena’s Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) since 2017, overseeing global marketing strategy, brand initiatives and corporate communications. Under his leadership, Ciena developed The Adaptive NetworkTM vision to articulate the company’s cross-portfolio value.
Gary Smith, CEO at Ciena said, “As we continue to diversify our business across customer segments, geographies and technologies, a critical part of our success is translating the value of our innovations into narratives and business outcomes to which customers can relate. Joe’s deep understanding of our business and our stakeholders’ expectations ideally positions him to execute a strategy positioning Ciena as the market leader in creating intelligent, scalable, adaptive networks.”
Cumello brings more than 25 years of marketing experience in networking technology. He initially joined Ciena in 2004 through its acquisition of Internet Photonics. He returned to Ciena in 2015 as Vice President of Portfolio Marketing through the company’s acquisition of Cyan, where he was CMO. He previously served as Vice President of Marketing at Sidera Networks and, prior to that, SafeNet. Cumello holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
