WEEE Takeback and Recycling Program

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Takeback and Recycling Program

Ciena is committed to environmentally responsible behavior.  As part of this commitment, we continually work to comply with environmental legislation such as the European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2019/19/EU, national regulations as applicable and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.  Numerous countries located outside of Europe, including those in Asia-Pacific, North and South America and the Middle East have developed – or have been developing – product specific legislation and have imposed certain restrictions at various degrees. Ciena monitors this progress and is compliant with all regional product legislation where Ciena’s products are supplied.

Ciena joins approved compliance organizations to meet its collection and take back obligations. In the countries where we do business Ciena works with Partners (AATFs ETC) to offer its Takeback and Recycle Program, for products falling within the scope of the WEEE legislation and national regulations.  The program provides customers a means to properly dispose of Ciena products at the end of their useful life as required by the applicable regulatory or contractual obligations. Only products falling within the scope of the EU WEEE Directive and national regulations are accepted unless pre-approval is obtained.

In addition, Ciena also supports customers who would like to reuse or recycle Ciena products that have reached the end of their useful life.  If you would like to obtain a quote for this service, please contact your Sales Representative or Program Manager.

Ciena is committed to environmental stewardship through the principles of the circular economy and the Takeback and Recycle Program includes where possible:

  • Re-use of used systems
  • Repurpose of components and subassemblies

When systems cannot be refurbished for reuse or repurpose, we use partners that arrange for recycling of material reducing landfilling and adverse environmental impacts.  Sustainable disposal processes comply with all environmental and data security legislation. See below for Disassembly Instructions.
