About Grant Hoffman
Grant Hoffman, Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer, brings a global, customer-first perspective to Ciena’s supply chain organization. With more than 25 years of leadership experience across supply chain, operations, and portfolio management, he leads the strategy and execution that help Ciena scale with speed, resilience, and quality.
Grant views supply chain as a collaborative partner in the product development process, engaging early with design and engineering teams to help ensure products are ready to scale at launch with quality, serviceability, and operational readiness built in.
“Everything is centered around scale,” Grant notes, pointing to the leadership capabilities, planning processes, quality measures, and IT systems needed to identify risks and opportunities across the supply chain.
His perspective is grounded in a career spent navigating complex global environments where business decisions, supplier networks, and operational change intersect.
As Grant puts it, “My career has been shaped by leading through change—across acquisitions, integrations, global operations, and large-scale transformation.” Nearly 20 years of work across suppliers, factories, and teams around the world has given him a pragmatic perspective of how supply chains operate through complex transitions.
Before joining Ciena, he served as Senior Vice President of Operations and Solutions Delivery for HP, overseeing customer delivery and service across approximately 170 countries, along with field and channel operations and broader business functions. He joined HP through its $3.3B acquisition of Poly, where he was Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer during a period of rapid demand growth for hybrid work communications technology. The experience gave him hands-on exposure to the complexity of scaling through backlog pressure, shifting customer needs, and a fast-moving demand environment.
Earlier in his career, Grant served as Vice President and Head of Global Supply Chain for Lenovo’s Mobile Phone division and held leadership roles at Google, Motorola, Continental AG, and Del Monte Foods. Together, those roles shaped his view of supply chain as the connection point between customer needs, supplier capability, and the relationships that help Ciena deliver.
Grant also sees AI as an important enabler of the next era of supply chain performance. That customer-to-supplier perspective gives him a practical lens on where AI can create value. By helping reduce the time between customer demand, supplier response, and fulfillment, AI has the potential to create what he describes as an almost instantaneous connection across the ecosystem—bringing supply and demand closer together so Ciena can move faster with greater insight.
Grant’s leadership style is authentic, collaborative, and results oriented. He focuses on creating an environment where people feel comfortable raising issues early, challenging assumptions, and working together toward thoughtful solutions. Curiosity is central to that mindset. Grant believes continual learning is a critical leadership element, following the sentiment Michelangelo expressed at 87 years old: “I am still learning.”
Grant lives outside Chicago with his wife, their four children, and their dogs. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends. Many of his closest friendships date back to grade school in Rochelle, Illinois, the small farming town where he grew up, and he credits that upbringing with giving him an early appreciation for hard work and lasting relationships.
Beyond his role at Ciena, Grant contributes to the broader supply chain and operations community through industry and academic advisory board roles, including the Institute of Business Forecasting, the University of Wisconsin’s The Erdman Center for Operations and Technology Management, and Northern Illinois University’s Department of Operations Management and Information Systems. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and an MBA from Northern Illinois University.
