ONOS (Open Network Operating System) is the open-source SDN platform for service provider networks. Curated by ON.Lab, ONOS is focused on a variety use cases, the primary one being CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter), which aims to replace the proprietary infrastructure of the traditional central office with open, commoditized software and hardware building blocks. Blue Planet ONOS (BP ONOS) provides a commercial-grade version of the ONOS SDN software backed by the company’s world-class software service, support, and development organization. Blue Planet is committed to open source and as a result, any enhancements or bug fixes made to ONOS will be contributed back into the open-source community.

Blue Planet ONOS is initially focused on the CORD use case, which complements and extends Blue Planet’s multi-domain and NFV service orchestration capabilities to control and orchestrate white box-based switching fabrics in central offices. By enabling transformation to an open, commodity-based infrastructure, Blue Planet and BP ONOS bring the economics and agility of a cloud data center to the service provider central office. Most importantly, Blue Planet ONOS gives service providers the ability to take advantage of the cumulative software expertise of the open-source community backed by Ciena’s world-class service and support to ensure a successful commercial deployment.
