Ciena operates its business in an ethical and socially responsible way, within the law and taking responsibility for the impacts of its decisions and activities on the environment, its employees, customers, suppliers and the communities in which it operates.
Ciena has adopted the principles set out in the Responsible Business Alliance (“RBA”) Code of Conduct. The RBA Code of Conduct establishes standards to ensure working conditions in the electronics industry supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity and that business operations are environmentally responsible and conducted ethically.
Ciena requires its suppliers to adhere to these same standards and principles. Fundamental to these principles is the understanding that a business must operate in full compliance with the laws of the countries in which it operates. Additionally, these principles are designed to encourage companies to go beyond legal compliance in order to advance social and environmental responsibility.
Ciena also has an active supplier diversity program, launched in 2013, that reflects the diversity of where we live, work, and serve. More details can be found at Ciena’s dedicated Supplier Diversity Internet site.
Ciena’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) management systems have been successfully audited by a third party certification body. Ciena has corporate certificates for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, which reflect the global compliance of Ciena’s Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety management systems respectively. Product environmental compliance
Ciena is committed to sourcing all of the components we use in our products in an ethical and socially responsible way. Below is the information about Ciena’s supply-chain environmental product compliance.
Conformity to the European Union (EU) Directive 2011/65/EU: Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) are available on a per product release basis. Please contact your Ciena representative for EU RoHS products declaration of conformity.
Conformity to the China RoHS Directive SJ/T 11364-2014 are available on a per product basis. Certificate of Compliance (CoC) are available on our customer portal (https://portal.ciena.com). Please contact your Ciena representative for access to the China RoHS products Certificate of Compliance.
Conformity to the Taiwan’s Marking of Presence Inspection Standard (Section 5 of CNS 15663(2013.7), are available on Ciena’s Taiwan RoHS public portal (http://www.ciena.com/Taiwan-DoC-RoHS/).
Ciena supports efforts to eliminate the use of tantalum, tin, gold, and tungsten obtained from sources that directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or an adjoining country.
Ciena has requested its suppliers of components that may contain tantalum, tin, gold, or tungsten to submit sourcing information using the questionnaire developed by the RBA and Global eSustainability Initiative (GeSI) working group. Ciena expects its suppliers to take similar measures with their own suppliers to reasonably assure responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain. Transparency in the supply chain
As an active member of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), Ciena supports efforts to ensure that working conditions are safe; that workers are treated with respect and dignity; and, that business operations are environmentally responsible and conducted ethically. More specifically, Ciena supports the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act, which seeks to increase the quantity of information made available by manufacturers and retailers regarding their efforts to address the issues of slavery and human trafficking. Ciena is engaged in many initiatives to ensure there is no human trafficking, forced labor, or child labor in its supply chain, including:
- Ciena maintains a strict set of Supplier Guidelines, to which all Ciena suppliers are expected to adhere. The RBA Code of Conduct, which contains provisions related to freely chosen employment and child labor avoidance, is a fundamental part of these guidelines.
- Ciena requires its suppliers to comply with all applicable laws, which include those related to slavery and human trafficking. Additionally, Ciena requires its key suppliers to confirm their compliance with United Nations labor and human rights conventions, including the abolition of child, bonded and forced labor, as well as working-hours laws and anti-discriminatory work practices.
- Ciena assesses its suppliers against the requirements of the RBA Code of Conduct, which precludes forced labor, slavery and trafficking of persons. This assessment includes evaluating results of independent, announced, third party compliance audits, conducted in line with RBA audit protocols.
- In the ongoing development of its supplier assessment program, Ciena will require suppliers to confirm, through completion of the RBA’s SAQ (Self-Assessment Questionnaire), their compliance with fair labor practices.
- Ciena has a rigorous Code of Business Conduct applicable to all employees. The Code indicates that the company does not tolerate unlawful discrimination or harassment of any kind, and requires employees to comply with all applicable laws, which include those regarding slavery and human trafficking.
Ciena ensures that employees and management who have direct responsibility for supplier engagement and selection receive training on human trafficking and slavery, particularly with respect to mitigating risks within the supply chain.
