Formatting your resume for success
Your resume stands out when it’s legible and easy to read. Most organizations have implemented various applicant tracking systems that convert a formatted resume into ‘simple’ text. Intricate fonts and elaborate graphics simply don’t translate. And if used, your profile may appear illegible after conversion.
Remember, your resume’s going to be seen on a computer or mobile screen, and at times in print. You’ll want to use a font that’s readable in all places.
For roles that call for a visual wow factor—such as a designer or a brand strategist—a portfolio or website is the perfect place to let your creative star shine.
How to make your resume stand out and land an Interview
Integrity. Innovation. A customer-first mentality. These are qualities that we look for in candidates. To make the application process easier, apply these attributes to your resume. And be sure you have specific examples and situations that illustrate your commitment to these values.
Leading with integrity is a trait we require. The technology-based industry is highly competitive. It’s critical that we remain ethical and fair in conducting business. Take a look at our ethical standards before applying and use that information in an interview.
Driving innovation and being a competitive figure in the technology industry is our primary mission. Be sure to include examples of how you’ve engineered inventive solutions on your resume.
Customer experience is the foundation of our success. We’re looking for candidates who can create, strengthen, and grow customer relationships. Keep this in mind when you’re applying or interviewing for a job.
Should I send samples of my work (writing, code, designs, etc.) with my resume or CV?
If you're selected for an interview, we may request work samples. If we do, we'll provide information about submitting them. If you have public copies of your work available for viewing online, include the links on your resume. You can also attach them to your online profile.
Match your skills and experience to the job
Carefully look at the job you’re applying for and tailor your profile to fit. Think of concrete examples you can use to highlight your skills. Start by making a list of the job requirements, and then match them to your experience. Providing evidence of your successes is a great way to promote your candidacy.
Show what you know
Demonstrate what you know about Ciena when answering questions. When discussing your career accomplishments, match them to the the job. Use examples from your research when answering questions. Before you interview, find out as much as you can about the job and Ciena. It’ll help you prepare to answer interview questions as well as ask questions about our company. You’ll also be able to find out whether our company and culture are a good fit for you.
Candidates are expected to come well prepared for discussions at all stages of the interview process. You should be ready for deep dive conversations on technical aspects.
Be ready with examples
Try to be ready with some practical examples of your experiences. Our panel loves to hear how you handle challenges. Real scenarios and examples are best.
Don’t give up. Think differently.
Sometimes in discussions, it’s not the correct or obvious answer that matters. Approach and attitude matter, too. Try to think differently and don’t give up easily if you have a logical approach.
