Net-centric services—based on Layer 3 IP routing—enable the information domination of the modern battle space, but are also vulnerable to a number of cyber threat scenarios. This paper examines how the insertion of a Layer 2 switching capability, based on carrier-class Ethernet, can improve the overall security of net-centric services and reduce overall risk to the war fighter. Specifically, this paper explores efficient bandwidth utilization in a .mil domain, network security inside of a black core, and network reconstitution after a cyber disaster.
