The demand for increased bandwidth is ever present. Today, transmission systems employing advanced modulation formats and coherent receivers with channel capacities of 40 Gb/s, and more recently 100 Gb/s, are widely deployed by both carriers and research network operators. This paper reviews the attributes of coherent systems in light of the challenges faced by system designers to realize 100 Gb/s optical transmission systems.
