Residential voice, video and data:
One network, many services
Accelerate the profitable delivery of new services over a converged switching and transport infrastructure

Business need

The "triple play" of providing data, voice and video services to consumers allows cable operators to optimize revenue-per-subscriber ratios and fuel business growth. You can now consolidate these packet-based services onto a single switching and transport network to efficiently manage CAPEX and OPEX while accelerating time-to-revenue for new services.

Challenges

Separate transport networks for data, voice and video services are not only expensive to build, they are also cost-prohibitive to operate and manage. Today's approach of transporting diverse service over different networks will not scale, and it constrains the growth of residential service revenues.

Solution

Ciena's platforms give you the opportunity to create innovative bundles of diverse services that generate incremental revenues from existing customers and attract new subscribers to the cable network. Operators can aggregate and transport these services from the headend to the d-hub over a single transport network. You can leverage Optical Ethernet to create a highly scalable-yet cost-effective-network that provides the service availability and QoS necessary to support the varying demands of high-speed data, voice/VoIP, and advanced video services (such as on-demand, DVR, HDTV broadcast, and more).

Ciena's offerings

Ciena offers a unique and proven intelligent approach to converging the transport of these services onto the same network that dramatically reduces the fiber requirements and the need for transport equipment. Ciena’s multiservice switches and multiplexers provide smooth scalability from a few GbEs to hundreds without complex management and network tuning, and allow operators to define and enforce QoS policies for each type of service. By utilizing scalable bandwidth offered over an intelligent Layer 1/Layer 2 infrastructure, you can best accommodate both the capacity and the loss, latency and jitter requirements of each service. You can channelize wavelengths and thus give each service type its own dedicated bandwidth or converge all services on a common Ethernet trunk and ensure sufficient resources and QoS using service VLANs. This is a much less complicated and much more cost-effective approach than attempting to converge all services over a routed infrastructure.

Benefits

  • Swiftly deliver flexible bundles of scalable data, voice and video services
  • Benefit from a return on investment in highly reliable and scalable platforms in as little as 18 months
  • Customize QoS to address the requirements of each service
  • Accelerate and scale service turn-up much faster than typical "router-everywhere" alternatives
  • Simplify the cost and complexity of network management by reducing the number of network platforms and consolidating services onto a single network
