High efficiency multiplexing of low-speed wavelengths allows service providers and enterprises to more effectively scale Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) infrastructure by lowering the unit cost per transported bit, while maintaining full service transparency similar to an individual wavelength service. The ONLINE Metro multiservice transport platform provides carrier-class solutions for service provider and enterprise environments, in which ONWAVE service blades are plug-in modules offering high-density, transparent aggregation of services onto networked wavelengths.
Ciena's 2.5G SONET/SDH ADD/DROP Multiplexer (ADM) Card transparently combines up to eight OC-3/STM-1 and/or four OC-12/STM-4 framed signals into an OC-48/STM-16 wavelength. Overhead transparency can be incrementally provisioned to allow client signal management and signaling
to either be carried through or terminated as standard Line Terminated Equipment (LTE). This enables applications such as direct router-interconnect, or carriage of sub-tending Bi-directional Line Switched Rings (BLSR) traffic. Additionally, an on-board SONET switch matrix provides STS-1 granularity for grooming at POP hand-off points. Two 2.5G SONET/SDH ADM cards can be mated in a shelf to function as a linear or ring SONET node capable of providing 1+1 or BLSR/MS-SPRING overlaid sub-networks within a DWDM system.
