Gigabit data connectivity has become a front-line requirement in both enterprise and service provider networks as an increasing number of applications are adapted to IP-based infrastructure or high-performance storage connectivity. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is often employed as a high-bandwidth, multi-protocol infrastructure for network convergence. The ONLINE Metro multiservice transport platform provides carrier-class robustness for high-availability enterprise and service provider environments, in which ONWAVE service blades are plug-in modules offering high-density aggregation of services onto fiber.
Ciena's Gigabit Rate Data Multiplexer (GRDM) Card offers enterprises a highly scalable, cost-effective solution for remote Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel (FC) and FICONTM connectivity. Businesses are able to reduce recurring bandwidth costs in environments in which they have access to dark fiber by eliminating costly channelized router ports and WAN conversion equipment with traditional carrier interfaces such as DS-3. The GRDM aggregates two client signals onto a single wavelength and enables transport as an OC-48/STM-16 framed WAN signal. Further, the GRDM can be combined with other ONWAVE service blades to aggregate onto OC-192 framed wavelengths. Integrated tributary (client) and line-side (WAN) performance monitoring provides detailed end-to-end fault management capabilities for the utmost in connectivity robustness. Consequently, service providers can offer both Ethernet and storage connectivity as a managed wavelength or private line service with full visibility for service level agreements, and SONET interoperability with traditional carrier infrastructure.
