Ciena's ESCON Multiplexer Card offers the enterprise a highly scalable, cost-effective solution for remote Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) connectivity, eliminating the need for costly WAN conversion equipment.
ESCON® Extension for remote connectivity of existing data center applications and devices remains a significant need for enterprises trying to leverage existing infrastructure as they build out high-availability campus environments for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR). Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is often employed as a highbandwidth, multi-protocol infrastructure for BC/DR. The ONLINE Metro multiservice transport platform provides carrier-class robustness for high-availability enterprise and service provider environments, in which ONWAVE service blades are plug-in modules offering high-density aggregation of services onto wavelengths and fiber.

Ciena’s ESCON Multiplexer Card offers the enterprise a highly scalable, cost-effective solution for remote Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) connectivity. Businesses can reduce recurring bandwidth costs in environments in which they have access to dark fiber by eliminating costly WAN conversion equipment with traditional service provider interfaces such as DS-3. The ESCON multiplexer aggregates up to 12 ESCON client signals onto a single wavelength and enables transport as an OC-48/STM-16 framed WAN signal. Further, the ESCON multiplexer can be combined with other ONWAVE service blades to aggregate onto OC-192 framed wavelengths. Integrated tributary (client) and line-side (WAN) performance monitoring provides detailed end-to-end fault management capabilities for the utmost in connectivity robustness. Consequently, service providers can provide ESCON connectivity as a managed wavelength service with full visibility for service level agreements, and SONET interoperability with traditional service provider infrastructure.
