The DS3 WAN Card and the Fiber Enhanced Channel Test Unit (Fiber ECTU) are the ATM Fabric Cards used in the DS3 configuration of the Ciena CNX-5TM Broadband DSL System; a solution designed to DSL-enable Lucent SLC® Series 5 (SLC-5) Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs). Together, these cards perform ATM aggregation, switching, and traffic management for multiple CNX-5 systems connected by a fiber ring and provide a DS3 network interface.

One Fiber ECTU is inserted into each dual channel bank, and a single DS3 WAN Card provides the DS3 network interface for the entire ring. Up to 15 Fiber ECTUs can be installed on the ring. The simple, integrated approach of the CNX-5 Broadband DSL System, combined with its DS3 backhaul capacity, delivers the most cost-effective and scalable solution for providing DSL service to subscribers served by SLC-5 remote terminals.

The DS3 WAN card and the Fiber ECTU provide the functions of a full-featured ATM multiplexer in a compact footprint. Carrier-class performance is assured with advanced ATM service support, sophisticated traffic management capabilities and large buffers to meet a wide range of service requirements. Services are compatible with all AAL types, including full VC Quality of Service (QoS) (CBR, UBR, VBR-rt, VBR-nrt, and UBRmdcr) with overbooking and support for UNI 3.0, UNI 3.1, and TM 4.0.

The Fiber ECTU provides a Command Line Interface (CLI) that can be accessed locally or remotely (after the system has been commissioned). CatenaViewTM EMS, a carrier-class Element Management System (EMS), is available for remote provisioning and management of DSL services, including F5 and physical loopback testing and performance statistics. Fiber ECTU nodes can be pre-provisioned before they are connected to the DS3 WAN card.

The DS3 configuration permits the aggregation of multiple CNX-5 systems in a ring or chain topology. This flexibility enables service providers to optimize the use of existing backhaul facilities and respond to increased demand for DSL service, making the CNX-5 DS3 option the most cost-effective and scalable solution for delivering DSL service from Lucent SLC® Series 5 (SLC-5) DLCs.
