The Enhanced Channel Unit (ECU) is a Subscriber Service Card used in the Ciena Broadband DSL System, a solution designed to DSL-enable Lucent SLC® Series 5 (SLC-5) Digital Loop Carriers. The ECU replaces the legacy POTS Channel Unit to provide two standards-compliant ports of POTS+DSL. The ECU installs the same way as a regular SLC-5 Channel Unit, and DSL service is provisioned the same way as typical DSL service from a DSLAM. The simple, integrated approach of the CNX-5 Broadband DSL system delivers the most cost-effective and scalable solution for providing DSL service to subscribers served by SLC-5 remote terminals.

The CNX-5 ECU is a simple, card-for-card, plug-and-play replacement that provides full POTS and DSL capability. No wiring or cabling changes, backplane modifications, or ATU-C POTS splitters are required. The ECU can be installed in any slot of the SLC-5.

Full carrier-grade POTS service is available as soon as the ECU card is inserted. DSL service can be provisioned remotely from the data Network Operations Center at any time without the need for additional hardware or services, and without loss of POTS density or service quality.

The DSL service is standards-compliant and fully interoperable with all major Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). Both fast and interleaved path modes are supported in a range of data rates in the upstream as well as the downstream direction. Line delay, upstream and downstream power control, signal to noise ration margins, DSL profiles, and alarm profiles are all configurable to suit the service provider’s requirements.

With the installation of the ECU, the legacy SLC Series 5 remote terminal can offer DSL services on demand, in addition to existing telephone services. The ECU is an integral part of Ciena’s CNX-5 Broadband DSL system, which offers a cost-effective solution to rapidly expand the DSL service footprint.
