CN 3605

Multiservice Edge Access Multiplexer
CN 3605
The CN 3605™ is Ciena's next-generation SONET/SDH and Ethernet edge access platform that allows service providers to quickly and cost-effectively deploy packet and TDM services over their existing infrastructure in a variety of configurations.

VERSATILITY AND RELIABILITY IN A COMPACT SHELF The CN 3605 is a next-generation SONET/SDH and Ethernet edge access platform that allows service providers to quickly and cost-effectively deploy packet and TDM services over their existing infrastructure in a variety of configurations. The compact, two rack-unit high CN 3605 shelf aggregates a combination of 28 x DS1 (or 21 x E1), 3 x DS3 (or 3 x E3), 6 x 10/100, and 2 x Gigabit Ethernet services onto dual OC-3/12/48 or STM-1/4/16 trunk interfaces. The CN 3605 delivers carrier-class reliability with UPSR/SNCP ring support, optional linear 1+1 APS/MSP facility protection and 1:1 equipment protection on the optical trunk interfaces.

A COMPLEMENTARY SOLUTION The CN 3605 is ideally suited for deployment in metro access rings, customer premise locations and outside plant cabinets. In these applications, the CN 3605 complements the CN 3600TM Multiservice Transport Platform—Ciena’s industry-leading metro transport network solution. As with Ciena's flagship CN 3600 product family, the CN 3605 platform is a truly global solution, supporting both ANSI/SONET and ETSI/SDH multiservice edge environments.

ETHERNET SWITCHING AND TRANSPORT Ciena's CN 3605 integrates Layer 2 Ethernet switching and statistical multiplexing functions to enable delivery of point-to-point and multipoint Ethernet services. Advanced features, such as 802.1Q/p VLAN prioritization and intelligent flow control mechanisms, support differentiated classes of service and carrier-grade SLAs. In addition, the CN 3605 platform implements standards-based GFP, LCAS, and VCAT (both Low-Order and High-Order), to maximize Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) bandwidth efficiency and lower the cost of service delivery.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE The CN 3605 is ideally suited for wireless backhaul applications where service providers are looking to migrate to a unified network that supports both TDM voice and new 3G/UMTS/Edge data services. The hybrid design of the CN 3605, which integrates
STS-1 and VT1.5 level grooming as well as Ethernet switching, eliminates the need for multiple overlays to support new data services. The CN 3605
also incorporates Low-Order VCAT technology to improve utilization of circuits currently being leased for data transport, further lowering costs. Deployed in the wireless Base Station Controller (BSC), the CN 3605 platform provides both DS1 and DS3 ports for aggregating NxT1 circuits, as well as 10/100 and GbE ports for aggregating data services. In this application the CN 3616TM would be used to aggregate all the remote traffic that is collected by the CN 3605s.

COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT Ciena's ON-Center Management System provides comprehensive management of the CN 3605 platform, enabling carriers to rapidly engineer, deploy, manage, and bill for new services. Fault, configuration, performance and service management/monitoring functions are facilitated at the element and sub-network level through an easy-to-use GUI. This management system is used for all CN 3600 products.
