Ciena's CN 3000 Series Multiservice Network Termination Equipment (NTE) includes carrier grade devices for customers requiring support of both TDM and Ethernet services over copper- or fiber-access infrastructures. The Multiservice NTE provides Ethernet and TDM interfaces and supports the IETF’s Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) architecture to transport TDM over Packet. This method allows traditional voice and TDM traffic, as well as native Ethernet LAN traffic, to be carried over metro and core data networks.

As with all CN 3000 Series NTE, Multiservice NTE can be located at the customer premises to provide intelligent demarcation between customer and carrier networks and support Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) for traffic management and performance monitoring, enabling end-to-end service monitoring and Service Level Agreement (SLA) verification. The devices can be managed fully from remote locations, providing tremendous savings on Operating Expenses (OPEX). Multiservice NTE features carrier-grade designs—including robust Quality of Service (QoS) support—and is highly flexible with programmable hardware that supports remote, in-service upgrades.

THE MULTISERVICE NTE IS PARTICULARLY WELL SUITED FOR WIRELESS BACKHAUL APPLICATIONS, allowing operators to use the same data network to support legacy services and a smooth transition to new 3G services. These capabilities allow the operator to reduce ongoing expenses and reap the full benefits of new mobile broadband services.

New broadband cellular services and technologies will drive dramatic increases in data traffic volumes, requiring mobile operators to deploy more transport capacity in the radio access network (RAN)—typically in the form of more E1/T1 leased lines—to link cell stations to their core networks. Increased backhaul costs will add significantly to mobile carriers’ network OPEX. The CN 3000 Series Multiservice NTE allows operators to implement backhaul cost-reduction techniques in the RAN and migrate smoothly from legacy to next-generation wireless services.

As legacy TDM services are migrated to emerging 3G packet-switched Gigabit Ethernet and IP/MPLS networks, support for TDM-over-Packet circuit emulation, pseudowires, and timing synchronization preserves the behavior and characteristics of the original 2/2.5G services. Support by Ciena’s ON-Center provides an integrated network management solution delivering end-to-end provisioning, configuration, performance, and health monitoring capabilities across Ciena's network platforms.
