With single channel add/drop granularity, the Select OADM is capable of dropping any mix of wavelengths to match different traffic demands at a given site within the network.

Multiple Select OADMs can be supported along a CoreStream Agility route, and all types of traffic patterns are supported between different OADM sites, as shown in the diagram. Within the same DWDM link, wavelengths can be provisioned to cover the entire route or any portion of the route. This capability allows a single longer distance route to replace multiple shorter segments.

The Select OADM allows channels to be dropped from any part of the C-band spectrum to support a variety of traffic patterns. The Select OADM incorporates Reconfigurable OADM (ROADM) functionality to adapt to changes in traffic patterns through software control.

To reduce network costs, the Select OADM can be installed initially as a terminal and upgraded to a full OADM as traffic demands dictate. Select OADM nodes can also be pre-provisioned for in-service upgrades to multi-degree optical switch sites.

The Select OADM supports mixed 2.5 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s, and 40 Gb/s wavelengths, as well as ITU-T wavelengths from Ciena’s CoreDirector Multiservice Optical Switch.
