ON-Center Service Layer Manager

ON-Center Service Layer Manager
ON-Center Service Layer Manager (SLM) provides network operators the tools to efficiently monitor the network from the perspective of their most important asset: the end-customer.

ON-Center SLM is part of the integrated ON-Center Network and Service Management Suite, Ciena's data-efficient, end-to-end network management solution. The SLM provides end-to-end service-focused performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and fault management capabilities. The software’s service monitoring tools support early detection, diagnosis, and prioritization of trouble spots within the network, allowing service providers to monitor and resolve problems proactively, before they impact revenue stream.

The auto discovery feature built into the SLM has a topology listener engine that receives notifications from other components in the ON-Center suite. It uses this information to automatically populate a realtime view of all the nodes, links, ports, and services that are active in the network. A user-defined container model allows Network Operations Center (NOC) personnel to organize the managed network objects efficiently. Also, the software systematically updates its database as new equipment or services are introduced.

The SLM provides a comprehensive circuit layout and performance view that dramatically simplifies the process of analyzing current and historical network activity. For each circuit in the discovered network, the software provides a detailed schematic of the circuit path, including the node, shelf, slot, port, and timeslot occupied by the circuit across each link.

A detailed circuit status summary allows the SLM to correlate all equipment alarms with affected circuits, and then generate a single view of all circuits and their current performance. This powerful window enables operators to concentrate network maintenance efforts on areas of concern, while dramatically enhancing operational efficiency.

The SLM's circuit performance feature maintains 15-minute performance monitoring data for each termination point in the network. The software also correlates and compiles the data to produce a comprehensive performance report for the entire life of the service.

Additionally, the circuit event monitor records circuit-affecting events across the network in chronological order. This real-time monitor for network performance and maintenance simplifies the process of troubleshooting network faults, while maintaining the quality of revenue-generating services.

Circuit history depicts both current circuit status and historical path used to verify where, when and why re-routes occurred. Alarms and events are correlated automatically to end-customer services. The SLM simplifies planned network activities through circuit utilization, which associates customer services with each node and link. Network operators can set up preventative end-to-end service layer threshold crossing alarms to alert the NOC of a potential revenue-affecting condition before it is evident to the user.

ON-Center Customer Network Manager Portal (CNMP) enables operators to sell service offerings beyond basic connectivity. Through this secure web portal, end customers can monitor the health and status of critical network services; trace the current circuit route taken through the network; and view alarm history and SLA report cards.
