ON-Center NCS is a technology module under the ON-Center management umbrella—Ciena’s FlexSelect management architecture. ON-Center provides common management functionality across the entire Ciena product portfolio including Service Layer Management, TMF 814 northbound interface for third-party integration and web-based customer network management that provides Service Level Agreement (SLA) verification and service monitoring capability to the end-user. The distributed, scalable ON-Center NCS architecture is versatile enough to be purchased separately, can manage its network of elements independently, and be integrated directly into an operator’s existing third-party management infrastructure using a standards-based SNMP Trap Forwarder.

ON-Center NCS is a full-service element and network management platform that provides a well-defined set of highly useable features facilitating control at each step of the management lifecycle, from network deployment to troubleshooting to ongoing maintenance. ON-Center NCS features address network deployment, network inventory, service management with Layer 2 packet service provisioning, performance monitoring, alarm management, configuration control and node level management. These features are designed to address distinct management tasks associated with metro optical networks.

Advanced tools automate many of the processes associated with these tasks including software/firmware downloads, auto discovery of the network topology and deployed elements, service setup and teardown, statistics collection and analysis, alarm filtering and automated response, configuration backup and restoration, and node level diagnostics and configuration control.

ON-Center NCS supports the full suite of Layer 1 and Layer 2 performance monitoring statistics captured by the network elements themselves that network operators can use to ensure compliance with SLAs. Graphical displays of real-time data are available for rapid and accurate troubleshooting of network problems while 15-minute and 24-hour statistics binning enables the collection and analysis of historical performance data.
