The F10-T is equipped with two full-duplex optical ports. The first, a pluggable XFP transceiver port equipped with Ciena’s unique FlexiPort technology, connects high-speed client services such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Local Area Network/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) PHY, OC-192/STM-64, 10G Fibre Channel (FC), and even regenerated OTU-2 with complete service transparency, meaning that each client bit is delivered at the far end exactly as it was received at the near end. The other, a network port implemented in discrete Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optics, is intended for long-range transport. This network port can be equipped with a fixed- or tunable-wavelength transmitter and can be protected with optional protection switching.

The F10-T module can even support several distinct methods of mapping a 10GbE LAN service into OTU-2 at various rates from 10.7 to 11.27 Gb/s for
transport. All mapping methods are software-provisionable from the native management interfaces. The module also offers either standard or enhanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) calculation to improve signal performance over lengthy spans.

When installed in the CN 4200 main slot, the F10-T module can perform system controller functions, including system initialization; diagnostics; provisioning; IP address detection and resolution; alarm reporting; network management connectivity; maintenance; current and historical performance monitoring; and compact flash memory. These functions are isolated from the transport function to avoid interruption to services transport due to standard system maintenance practices.

The controller module is equipped with three management ports that provide the means to provision, control, and monitor the entire chassis.
