Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet Service Extension Family of products provide cost-effective, carrier-class Ethernet access and aggregation solutions for delivering profitable managed Ethernet business services and wireless voice and data traffic backhaul across both fiber- and copperbased access networks.

Within the series, the Ethernet-over-Fiber Demarcation Devices are small, purposebuilt devices that provide Ethernet interfaces (10/100/1000) at the customer premises and consolidate traffic from multiple customers and services onto Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connections into the Packet Switched Network. Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optical interfaces allow users to select the appropriate optical reach, wavelength and fiber type.

These fiber demarcation devices create an intelligent Ethernet demarcation between customer and carrier networks and support Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) protocols aligned with the IEEE 802.3ah/ 802.1ag and ITU-T Y.1731 specifications. This support allows carriers to detect and troubleshoot network faults remotely, configure user parameters, and monitor network performance so services are easy to provision and maintain and Service Level Agreement (SLA) conformance can be verified without costly truck rolls to the customer site.

Comprehensive Layer 2 Ethernet capabilities—including Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) forwarding and stacking, classification, queuing and policing—enable carriers to separate and prioritize traffic and create tiered service definitions, with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, for high-speed Internet access, VoIP, video and other mission-critical data applications. Best-in-class service reliability is assured, with options for redundant power supplies and Wide Area Network (WAN) interfaces, including support for 1+1 link protection and IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP).

To provide long-term managed Ethernet service benefits and ensure continued customer satisfaction, Ciena’s platforms allow service providers to satisfy immediate customer needs and adapt as service requirements evolve, without replacing hardware. Through simple remote software downloads, carriers can turn-up extra network and subscriber ports, activate WAN interface redundancy and upgrade OAM, QoS and new featurecapabilities.
