All three FSLM modules—FSLM-2, FSLM-2TN and FLSM-20—feature Ciena’s FlexiPort technology which enables each FSLM to support multiple protocols, including SONET/SDH, Ethernet, and Optical Transport Network (OTN), in a single line module. The FSLM-20 module, which supports OC-3/ 12/48, STM-1/4/16, GE and OTU-1 rates, can replace the current LM-8 and LM-16 modules, and Gigabit Ethernet Line Module. The FSLM-2 module supports OC-192/ STM-64, 10GbE, and OTU-2 rates and replaces the LM-2 module.

The FSLM-2TN module supports the same protocols as the FSLM-2 and two LT-EXFP line-side Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optics. These pluggable/ tunable optics enable CoreDirector FS to provide Ultra Long-Haul (ULH) DWDM signals that send wavelengths directly into the ActivSpan 4200® 5-slot Advanced Services Platform and CoreStream® Agility Optical Transport System, or third-party optical mux/demux ports. This capability eliminates the need for back-to-back short-reach client interfaces.

Because the FSLMs can support OTN, CoreDirector FS can eliminate OTN/WDM Multiservice Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) by head-ending OTN-based rings. CoreDirector FS uses OTN ports and cross-connects to offer a migration path from SONET/SDH to next-generation OTN networking by acting as a gateway, wrapping SONET/SDH signals and GbE and ODU sub-wavelengths into OTN signals. CoreDirector FS supports sub ODU-1 switching to 155 Mb/s granularity called
Optical channel Payload Virtual Containers (OPVCs).

By efficiently combining multiple services onto a single OC-192/STM-64 or service- transparent G.709 OTU-2 frame, the FSLMs enable CoreDirector FS to improve bandwidth utilization and free up valuable network capacity, delivering each client bit at the far end exactly as it was received at the near end. CoreDirector FS improves network efficiency by grooming traffic and packing wavelengths to their maximum capacity, offering operators a path to efficient networking.
