The TDM-over-Packet (TDMoP) Port Adapter for the CN 5060 supports highly scalable and reliable circuit emulation of TDM services over packet-switched networks.

The port adapter addresses the requirements for 2G/3G converged Radio Access Network (RAN) transport of mobile wireless traffic and migration of traditional TDM business private line services over a converged Ethernet infrastructure.

In the RAN transport application the CN 5060 aggregates Ethernet backhaul connections from the base stations, including a mix of native Ethernet and TDMoP voice and data traffic. The port adapter converts TDMoP traffic back to native TDM for handoff to the base station controllers. This exchange enables the convergence of 2G/3G backhaul on to an Ethernet RAN.

For traditional private line business services, the port adapter supports the migration of legacy TDM service onto a converged Ethernet infrastructure. In this application the CN 5060 aggregates TDM private line services from the access network, then converts or interworks those services to packet using one of the TDMoP methods. The private line services are then transported over a service provider’s converged Ethernet infrastructure along with their other packet services.

The TDMoP port adapter offers the highest density of T1/E1s over packet in the industry, provides unmatched six-9s reliability when transporting TDM, and features the lowest price per T1/DS0. Operators can converge TDM services and networks onto next-generation packet infrastructures to reduce the number of networks and elements, thereby lowering capital and operating expenses. In addition, the port adapter seamlessly integrates with Ciena’s CN 3180 Multiservice Network Termination Equipment (NTE).

This port adapter supports 4 channelized OC-3/ STM-1 ports or 1 OC-12/STM-4 port, and can accommodate traditional DS0, DS1/E1, and DS3 circuit transport across a Multi-Protocol Label
Switching (MPLS) or Ethernet core with physical OC-3/STM-1 or OC-12/STM-4 ports to provide highly reliable APS 1+1 physical protection. The OC-3/STM-1 and OC-12/STM-4 ports are channelized to accommodate lower-speed circuit emulation services.

Another important feature is the port adapter’s ability to take VLAN tagged or dry martini frame handoffs from NTE that could reside at the base station or customer premises.
