The 5400 Family offers the industry’s first fully modular and reconfigurable switching platform. It enables practical transition to a converged OTN and Ethernet-based, service-enabling intelligent infrastructure to achieve unmatched CAPEX and OPEX reduction, rapid service delivery, and high network availability.

Building on Ciena’s industry leadership in OTN, coherent optical processing, 40G/100G, Carrier Ethernet, and mesh restoration-capable control planes, the 5400 Family is fully compatible with and unites the best of these technologies to create a truly converged high-performance, highly available switching and transport solution. The ability to perform optimized SONET/SDH, OTN and packet switching seamlessly within the same network element enables a wide range of cost-effective network service offerings, including Ethernet/TDM private lines, video contribution/distribution, and VPN services. The 5400 Family allows service providers to minimize network CAPEX significantly through reductions in equipment, space, power, and spares, while cutting OPEX via process automation and network simplification.

The 5400 Family employs Ciena’s world-renowned multi-layer optical control plane to automate labor-intensive operations including planning, provisioning, and topology and inventory management. FastMesh® algorithms also enable Ciena’s optical control plane to provide the highest availability networks—measured in the field at over six-9s—for mission-critical services.

Currently, the 5400 Family consists of two separate system options—the 5410 and 5430 Reconfigurable Switching Systems—that can share hardware and software modules, allowing network operators to optimize each location in terms of required function, bandwidth, space, power, and cost.

  • The 5430 is the industry’s first multi-terabit packet-optical switching platform that transforms networks into scalable, flexible, cost-reduced service-enabling intelligent infrastructures to meet the monumental traffic growth challenges of the 21st century. The system features SONET/SDH/OTN and packet switch fabric, intelligent multilayer optical control plane, and compact design, with 3.6 Tb/s switch capacity in a single bay, scalable to 15 Tb/s and beyond. The 5430 is optimized for cost-effective, next-generation bandwidth management, enabling efficient aggregation, grooming, and forwarding of multiple traffic types in regional and core networks.
  • The 5410 features a unified SONET/SDH/OTN/packet switch fabric, intelligent multi-layer optical control plane, and compact design, with 1.2 Tb/s switch capacity in a single bay, scalable to 5 Tb/s and beyond. The 5410 is optimized for cost-effective, next-generation bandwidth management, enabling efficient aggregation, grooming, and forwarding of multiple traffic types in metro and regional sites.

Both products use Ciena’s FlexiPort technology to offer unprecedented flexibility and investment protection, with programmable interfaces for switching SONET/SDH, OTN, and Ethernet, and are architected to support speeds ranging from 155M to 100G* in a high-density, energy-efficient platform.

Ciena’s state-of-the-art WaveLogic™ Coherent Optical Processors are also supported on the 5400 Series, providing plug-and-play scaling of bandwidth to maximum capacity (40G and 100G).

The 5400 Family products are managed by Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System, a single network and service management layer that spans Ciena’s entire solutions portfolio, offering cohesive visibility and control of wavelength, OTN and packet services from the edge access through the network core.
