CIENA EXPANDS INTO LATIN AMERICA

Appoints M. Arely Castellón Vice President and General Manager of Latin America Region

Ciena Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN) today announced that M. Arely Castellón has been appointed as its new Vice President and General Manager of the Latin America region. Ms. Castellón will oversee Ciena's Latin American sales and marketing operations and will report to Gary Smith, Ciena's senior vice president of worldwide sales.

Castellón brings a wealth of experience to Ciena in the development of new business activities in Latin America serving in numerous management positions over the last twenty years. She has worked for AT&T, MCI, Sprint International (Global One) and Xerox. Most recently, she served as vice president and general manager with Motorola International Network Ventures in Latin America, where she was responsible for driving the transition of basic cellular companies to full service telecom operators.
