Chaddick to Head CIENA's Core Switching Division

Linthicum, MD — 07/09/1999

Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN) today announced that Steve Chaddick, a founding member of Ciena's management team and currently Ciena's Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development, has been appointed acting President of Ciena's Core Switching Division. Chaddick replaces Jagdeep Singh who is resigning his positions with Ciena to pursue other interests.

"Steve was instrumental in the success of Ciena's product development efforts and I'm pleased he has agreed to accept the role of acting Division President," said Patrick Nettles, Ciena's president and chief executive officer. "I'm confident the strength of our Core Switching Division team combined with Steve's experience bringing products to market will ensure the development work on MultiWave CoreDirector™ remains on target for anticipated customer trials and general product availability."

Chaddick joined Ciena in 1994 as Vice President, Product Development. He served as Senior Vice President, Products and Technologies from September 1996 through September 1998 when he assumed the role of Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development. Prior to joining Ciena, Chaddick was Vice President of Engineering at AT&T Tridom, a company he co-founded in 1983 and which was acquired by AT&T in 1988. Chaddick received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also a board member of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF).

"Jagdeep was important in setting the early direction for Lightera and while we're disappointed with his decision to leave at this time, we remain grateful for his contributions and for the stellar team he assembled," concluded Nettles.

Jagdeep Singh joined the Ciena Board of Directors in March of this year following Ciena's acquisition of Lightera Networks and was named President of Ciena's Core Switching Division. The company will commence an active search to find a permanent Core Switching Division President and the board of directors is currently in the process of selecting and interviewing potential candidates to fill Ciena's two board vacancies.
