METRORED DEPLOYS CIENA'S MULTIWAVE CORESTREAM; BRAZIL'S TWO LEADING BUSINESS CITIES BENEFIT FROM HIGH-CAPACITY NETWORK

Network Deployments Further Strengthen CIENA's Growing Presence in Latin America

LINTHICUM, Md & SÃO PAULO, Brazil — 01/30/2001

Ciena Corporation (CIEN) and MetroRED Telecomunicações, a subsidiary of MetroRED Telecom Group Ltd. and a leader in Latin American telecommunications services, today announced a strategic agreement for MetroRED to deploy Ciena's MultiWave CoreStream™ intelligent optical transport systems for its high-capacity network connecting São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The deployment of Ciena's CoreStream systems, designed for high-capacity long-haul applications, will enable MetroRED to deliver the network capacity that scales to economically meet current and future bandwidth requirements.

"Based on our customers' growing requirements and the market's diversity, MetroRED is developing its services to transparently deliver more voice and data than any other Latin American carrier," said José Gaudêncio Jardim, President of MetroRED Brazil. "With Ciena's market-leading CoreStream systems supporting some of the most critical applications in the MetroRED network, we are underscoring our commitment to offer leading-edge communication services at higher speeds over a flexible and cost-effective network to meet the customer demands of today and tomorrow."

Ciena's CoreStream is designed to enable service providers to minimize the cost of optical transport and maximize revenue-generating bandwidth. MetroRED will economically benefit because CoreStream is designed to scale to support up to 96 channels at 10 gigabits per second over a single fiber pair. Ciena recently announced new enhancements to the CoreStream platform that it believes will increase capacity to approximately two terabits per second this calendar year. Additionally, Ciena's intelligent optical transport systems are designed for added reliability and performance with embedded software intelligence within each CoreStream element.

"The MetroRED relationship is a significant win for Ciena and reinforces our presence in Brazil," said Arely Castellón, Ciena's Vice President and General Manager, Latin America. "Because of MetroRED's leadership in serving the Latin American market, we are especially pleased that they have selected Ciena's next-generation intelligent optical systems to optimize their network to support continued success."
