CIENA APPOINTS RAFAEL DE ORY MANAGING DIRECTOR, EMEA

Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), a global leader in intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced that Rafael de Ory has been appointed to the newly created position of Managing Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Mr. de Ory is primarily responsible for managing regional operations and expanding Ciena's strategic business relationships with service providers. In addition to broadening Ciena's customer base, he will be tasked with continuing the company's excellence in systems engineering and field support across the region. Mr. de Ory's office is at Ciena's EMEA headquarters in London.

Prior to joining Ciena, Mr. de Ory held multiple senior positions both domestically and internationally at Alcatel. Most recently, Mr. de Ory served as a vice president for Alcatel Spain and Latin America where he was responsible for defining and implementing regional corporate strategies for business development, marketing and sales efforts.

Mr. de Ory earned an M.S. in computer science from the University of California, Los Angeles and a graduate degree in electronics from the Polytechnic School of Madrid, Spain.
