CIENA LAUNCHES FULL-SERVICE REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS IN HONG KONG
New Facility Will Serve As Hub For Asia Pacific Operations
Hong Kong — 06/18/2001Ciena Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN), a global provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced the launch of its Asia Pacific regional headquarters in Hong Kong. The newly opened full-service office provides sales, training, testing and support facilities to staff and customers across the Asia Pacific region.
The launch of the Hong Kong facility is the latest in a series of investments that underscore the company's long-term commitment to the Asia Pacific region. In addition to Ciena's presence in the key Asian markets of Japan and Korea, the company is planning to launch sales offices in other major cities throughout Asia in the near future. Ciena already conducts business with leading Asian telecommunications and Internet service providers.
"Asia is a key growth market for optical-based broadband solutions," said Claude Achcar, Ciena's managing director, Asia Pacific. "We've been closely monitoring developments across Asia Pacific, and now that our business in the region has reached critical mass, we believe the time is right to launch a full-service regional facility that is readily accessible to our growing base of customers."
Gary Smith, president and chief executive officer of Ciena, also believes Asian markets are ready to benefit from next-generation equipment instead of continued investment in legacy networking systems, which create increasing cost inefficiencies as they scale to meet the demand of new data services and applications.
"Ciena's intelligent optical networking solutions suit the evolving needs of major service providers across Asia," Smith said. "Our customers are looking to migrate from their current network architectures to more cost-effectively support the introduction of new revenue-generating, high-bandwidth services, and at the same time, reduce capital and operating costs to be competitive. Ciena's broad portfolio of solutions helps them achieve this goal by distributing software-based intelligence across fiber-optic networks to streamline operations and leverage existing infrastructure investments."
Ciena brings to the Asian market a comprehensive portfolio of leading-edge solutions for core and metropolitan optical networks. These include its award-winning MultiWave CoreDirectorTM platform, the market's leading intelligent optical core switch, as well as its MultiWave MetroDirector K2™ next-generation multi-service access and switching platform. Ciena also provides high-capacity optical transmission through its MultiWave CoreStreamTM system for long-haul and ultra long-haul networking, as well as the MultiWave Metro™ system for metropolitan area networking. Ciena's LightWorks ON-Center™ provides a suite of management and planning software for intelligent optical networks and services.
Products from Ciena's family of intelligent optical networking solutions will be on display at CommunicAsia 2001 in Singapore, June 19 - 22.
Ciena Corporation's market-leading optical networking systems form the core for the new era of networks and services worldwide. Ciena's LightWorks™ architecture enables next-generation optical services and changes the fundamental economics of service-provider networks by simplifying the network and reducing the cost to operate it.
