GERMANY'S HANSENET OPTS FOR CIENA'S METRO OPTICAL TRANSPORT SOLUTION
Linthicum, MD — 01/04/2000Ciena Corporation (CIEN) today announced that HanseNet Telekommunikation GmbH, the Hamburg-based city carrier, has deployed Ciena's MultiWave Metro™ optical transport system in its local network. The solution from Ciena, a leading developer of intelligent optical networking solutions worldwide, provides HanseNet with connections across Hamburg to a regional carrier.
"With proven experience in metropolitan transport solutions, Ciena can quickly implement a reliable system, allowing HanseNet to efficiently translate much-needed capacity into revenue-generating services," said Frank Jensen, technical manager at HanseNet. "The intelligent optical transport capabilities of Ciena's MultiWave Metro are the foundation for moving toward the next-generation of network manageability and scalability."
Using dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology pioneered by Ciena, MultiWave Metro is an intelligent optical transport system designed for short-haul applications. Through configuration in point-to-point, mesh or ring topologies, Metro enables Ciena customers to rapidly support SONET/SDH, IP, ATM, Gigabit Ethernet, or private line high-bandwidth services.
"While the overall metro DWDM market clearly is in its early stages of development, there are signs that it is becoming a viable option more quickly in specific market segments," said Trans-Formation's Mark Lutkowitz, who recently issued an extensive report on metropolitan DWDM. "In markets such as Europe, for example, where competition has recently exploded and where it is often more difficult and costly to lay additional fiber, metro DWDM suppliers that provide turnkey solutions and network implementation are poised to establish themselves now with both incumbent and competitive carriers."
MultiWave Metro is a component of Ciena's LightWorks architecture, the foundation for simpler, more cost-effective networks. By providing intelligent, scalable products from the edge of the network to the core, Ciena is helping service providers break free of the complexities and expense of the legacy network infrastructure.
"As competition becomes increasingly more intense in Europe and other markets, carriers like HanseNet will continue to evolve their service offerings and grow their networks," said Guy S. Powell, Ciena's vice president of the Europe/Middle East/Africa region. "Ciena's intelligent optical networking solutions will help these carriers cost-effectively provision, manage and scale their networks while providing the capacity to rapidly deliver many types of new high-bandwidth services."
Pan Dacom GmbH, serving as Ciena's distributor, will supply, install and service Ciena systems deployed in the HanseNet network.
Ciena Corporation's market-leading optical networking systems form the core for the new era of telecommunications networks worldwide. Ciena's LightWorks™ architecture changes the fundamental economics of service-provider networks by simplifying the network and reducing the cost to operate it.
