RHK REPORT NAMES CIENA LEADER IN EUROPEAN OPTICAL NETWORKS MARKET
CIENA Takes Lead in Europe Claiming 35% of 1999 Market Share According to RHK Need for Faster Deployments Favors CIENA Over Other Suppliers
Linthicum, MD — 04/12/2000Ciena Corporation (CIEN) today announced that the latest report from telecommunications market research firm RHK has named Ciena the leader in the European market for optical transport systems. According to the report, European WDM & Optical Networks: Market Share and Analysis 1999, Ciena's 1999 market share for intelligent optical transport systems deployed in European networks was higher than any other optical networking supplier. According to the report, Ciena claimed 35 percent of the estimated $532 million (USD) European market.
"Ciena has seen a great deal of success with its long- and short-haul systems in Europe, particularly with the emerging carriers and pan-European network providers said Stéphane Téral, RHK's analyst covering European telecom markets. "Much of Ciena's success in this market can be attributed to its ability to deliver, install and turn-up services rapidly. These are key criteria, especially for the aggressive carriers looking to bring new services to market very quickly."
Ciena's MultiWave CoreStream™ system is the industry's first intelligent optical platform to deliver 96 optical channels with future scalability to a capacity of approximately two terabits per second over a single fiber pair. Ciena currently is shipping both the OC-48 (STM-16) and OC-192 (STM-64) capability for this system, as well as its MultiWave Metro™ system for metropolitan area networking to 13 carriers in Europe.
"Naturally Ciena is pleased with the findings in the RHK report," said Guy S. Powell, Ciena's vice president, Europe/Middle East/Africa. "We intend to capitalize on this lead by continuing our focus on responsive customer support services and by continuing to bring to market more leading-edge
technologies that enable our customers to offer new innovative optical services."
With European offices in London, Paris, Brussels and Frankfurt, Ciena employs more than 150 professionals across Europe dedicated to sales, customer service and support. In Ciena's fiscal year 1999, approximately 44 percent of the company's revenues came from outside the United States.
Ciena Corporation's market-leading optical networking systems form the core for the new era of networks and services worldwide. Ciena's LightWorks™ architecture enables next-generation optical services and changes the fundamental economics of service-provider networks by simplifying the network and reducing the cost to operate it.
