Telecom Ottawa Offers SONET, WDM and Storage Extension Services Based on Ciena Platforms

Services qualified to interconnect Canadian federal government agencies and organizations and provide wholesale connectivity for carriers in metropolitan Ottawa region

Linthicum, MD — 10/03/2005

Telecom Ottawa, a network services provider to Eastern Ontario businesses and public-sector organizations, today announced the availability of a suite of SONET, WDM and storage extension services enabled by platforms from Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist. These services are designed to provide Canadian federal government agencies, as well as enterprises and carriers, with reliable, high-performance 10-Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connectivity throughout the Ottawa metropolitan region.

Telecom Ottawa is launching the new services at GTEC, a world-class showcase of IT products, services and solutions for e-government that is taking place October 3-5 at the Ottawa Congress Centre & Westin Hotel. Telecom Ottawa will be highlighting the new services in its booth (#216) at GTEC.

Telecom Ottawa can sell IT connectivity and network services to Canadian government agencies, boards or clients based on its qualification under the Canadian government’s Converged Network Services Supply Arrangement.

Ciena’s ONLINE Metro Multiservice DWDM transport platform has been deployed by Telecom Ottawa as the foundation for delivering the new services. Based on the agreement between the two companies, Telecom Ottawa also can deploy Ciena’s CN 2000Storage Extension Platform and CN 2600 Multiservice Edge Aggregator based on customer needs or additional service expansion.

“In addition to our reputation as a leading broadband data and network services provider, and the extensive reach of our fibre optic network throughout metropolitan Ottawa, Ciena’s multiservice solutions now enable us to deliver carrier-class SONET, WDM and storage services to target a new set of customers,” said Jacques Taillefer, acting chief operating officer and vice president of sales, Telecom Ottawa.

“Government communications requirements are changing drastically to support real-time decision-making and inter-agency collaboration, so the performance and reliability of multi-site wide area networks is critical,” said Mike Aquino, vice president, Americas Sales, Ciena. “Our work with Telecom Ottawa highlights Ciena’s approach to these requirements with our Adaptive WAN solution – a set of multiservice transport and switching platforms that serve as building blocks for creating networks that are always available, never drop traffic and deliver predictable network performance.”
