CIENA BRINGS THE INTELLIGENT OPTICAL INTERNET TO SUPERCOMM 2000

CIENA Shows Service Providers New Optical Service Capabilities With Four Optical Networking Demonstrations, Two New Product Offerings and Optical University Seminars

Linthicum, MD — 05/31/2000

Visitors to Ciena Corporation's (CIEN) booth (#5653) at SuperComm 2000 will see the Intelligent Optical Internet become reality with the delivery of next-generation dynamic optical services. Ciena will showcase four optical networking demonstrations, feature its two latest product offerings and host three days of seminars at the Ciena Optical University - all at booth #5653, June 6-8 in Atlanta.

Ciena's LightWorks™ network architecture is the basis of the Intelligent Optical Internet, Ciena's vision of a seamless, dynamic internetwork of the optical and IP layers. At SuperComm, Ciena will demonstrate how this model turns networking intelligence into new optical services. Demos will include Real-Time Optical Service Delivery, Wide Area Ethernet Transport, Optical Layer Protection, and 10G Optical Internet. These demos feature Ciena's MultiWave CoreDirector™, MultiWave CoreStream™, MultiWave Metro™ and Metro One™, and MultiWave EdgeDirector™ systems, as well as Juniper Networks' M40™ and M160™ Internet backbone routers.

"This will be the first time that all the different network systems are available for true dynamic delivery of new optical services," said Patrick Nettles, president and CEO of Ciena. "With our continued focus on the business needs of service providers, Ciena offers tools that enable providers to take advantage of embedded network intelligence. At SuperComm, Ciena will demonstrate how to achieve next-generation service delivery today."

Optical University 2000

Ciena will continue its Optical University series of seminars at SuperComm 2000 to help service providers find new ways of quickly creating new services and applications for the Internet economy.

This year's featured speaker is FORTUNE magazine's Editor-at-Large Andy Serwer, who will provide a detailed viewpoint of the new economy from a business perspective.

The Ciena Optical University roster of speakers also includes leading industry analysts from Aberdeen Group and RHK, innovative service providers like Williams Communications and iaxis, experts in Internet backbone routing from Juniper Networks, and senior engineers behind the development of the industry's leading intelligent optical networking systems.

New Solutions in the LightWorks Family

As part of Ciena's commitment to providing comprehensive optical networking solutions, the company will feature at SuperComm 2000 its newest products, LightWorks ON-Center™ Management Suite and MultiWave CoreDirector™ CI intelligent optical core switch.

ON-Center is Ciena's new fully integrated family of software-based tools for comprehensive element, network and service layer management across service provider networks. ON-Center is designed to enable accelerated deployment of new, differentiating optical services, reduced network operating and management costs, and innovative customer service solutions.

CoreDirector CI, an entry version of Ciena's market-leading MultiWave CoreDirector, is designed to offer network operators all the intelligence, real-time provisioning, dynamic network protection, and comprehensive network management capabilities of CoreDirector, but is optimized for smaller central offices (COs) predominant in regional and metropolitan portions of service provider networks. Together, CoreDirector and CoreDirector CI offer a cost-effective optical solution for end-to-end backbone networking with highly distributed intelligence.
