CIENA MOVES HEADQUARTERS TO LINTHICUM, MARYLAND

Hires Joe Berthold as Chief, Network Architecture

Linthicum, MD — 04/24/1997

Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), announced today that it has officially moved its headquarters facility to Linthicum, Maryland. Ciena’s new headquarters at 920 Elkridge Landing Road in Linthicum comprises 96,500 square feet, and houses research and development, sales and marketing, and administrative functions.

The former Savage, Maryland headquarters building has been converted entirely to manufacturing use, with 50,500 square feet to be dedicated to state of the art opto-electronic module assembly and test. Ciena also announced the signing of a lease for an additional 57,000 square feet of manufacturing space in the Linthicum area, which will be occupied in May.

"The rapid expansion of our operation was planned and executed on schedule," said Pat Nettles, president and CEO of Ciena. "The expansion of our manufacturing facilities are a result of our customers’ confidence in the solutions we are providing for their networks."

Ciena also announced that Joe Berthold has accepted and joined the company as chief, Network Architecture. Berthold spent the last 20 years working at Bellcore and, earlier, at Bell Labs. His most recent assignment was executive director, manager of the Optical Networking Program at Bellcore.

He also was chairman of the Technical Management Committee of the MultiWaveTMlength Optical Networking (MONET) Consortium. MONET is a four-year, $100M research project aimed at bringing optical networking to the point of commercial viability. This program is supported by DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense, and Bellcore’s current owners, the seven Regional Bell Operating Companies.

Berthold also has experience in broadband network architectures, network traffic control, broadband network planning tools, distributed systems for the management of broadband networks and creating network planning tools for the optimal design of survivable SONET transport networks. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Seton Hall, a Ph.D in Physics from Brown University and has done post doctoral work at Cornell University.

"Joe’s background in telecommunications and experience in optical networks add tremendous depth to our staff," said Steve Chaddick, senior vice president of products and technology. "We welcome his arrival and eagerly anticipate his contribution in helping define the network architectures of the future."

Ciena Corporation is a leading supplier of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) fiber optic transmission systems to long distance fiber optic telecommunications carriers.
