CIENA AND ONI SET DATES FOR EXPECTED STOCKHOLDER MEETINGS

Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN) and ONI Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: ONIS) today announced that each company will hold a special meeting of shareholders on June 18, 2002, for the purpose of approving the proposed merger between the two companies.

The companies’ Boards of Directors, acting separately, set Thursday, May 9, 2002, as the record date for the determination of stockholders entitled to vote at the meeting. Assuming the requisite approval by both companies’ stockholders, the merger is expected to close on June 18, 2002 or soon thereafter. Details of the time and location of each company’s stockholder meeting will be forthcoming in the proxy materials, which are expected to be mailed to stockholders on or about May 17, 2002.
