DON H. DAVIS, JR. JOINS CIENA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN) today announced that Don H. Davis, Jr., chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Rockwell Automation, has joined Ciena's board of directors.

"Don's leadership and his extensive experience will be extremely beneficial to Ciena as we look to further expand our market opportunity and execute on key strategies for maintaining market leadership," said Gary Smith, Ciena's president and CEO.

Davis, 62, has been with Rockwell, since 1985. His responsibilities as chairman and
CEO were preceded by roles as executive vice president and president and chief operating officer. In addition, Davis held a variety of leadership roles with the Allen-Bradley Company from 1963 until 1985, when it was acquired by Rockwell International.

In addition to the Rockwell Automation board, Davis is a member of the board of directors of Illinois Tool Works and Apogent Technologies. He is also a member of the Business Council, the Business Roundtable, and The Conference Board.

Mr. Davis earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Texas A&M University.
