RED ELÉCTRICA TELECOMUNICACIONES SELECTS CIENA TO EXTEND BROADBAND SERVICES

DN 7 Series Multiservice Switch Enables More Cost Effective Delivery of Services and Migration Toward MPLS-Based Converged Network

LINTHICUM, Md. & MADRID — 02/18/2004

Ciena® Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN), a leading global provider of innovative network solutions, today announced that Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones, which operates by the commercial brand albura, has selected Ciena’s DN 7 series multiservice switching platform for deployment in the expansion of its national network and migration to an MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) architecture. Ciena’s DN 7 solution provides Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones an economically scalable solution for aggregating traffic across its network and extending the reach of its ADSL service offerings.

Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones has selected Ciena’s DN 7 series platform for its ability to minimize the company’s capital and operating costs, in this case primarily through the reduction of leased-line expenditures by efficiently transporting and consolidating its ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network traffic to support its high-growth ADSL services. The selection of Ciena’s DN 7 series platform allows Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones to take the next steps toward a seamless and efficient network migration for all Layer 2 and Layer 3 services on a converged MPLS network.

Jesús Sánchez Ríos, Director General of Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones explained: “Ciena’s DN 7 series platform allows us to cost-effectively broaden our ADSL service reach while enhancing the scalability and reliability of our network. The DN 7 platform also brings a high level of service availability not achievable with traditional multiservice equipment. It enhances our architecture to support a smooth migration to next-generation IP/MPLS services as our network evolves.” He added, “The DN 7 solution integrates well with Red Eléctrica’s aggressive plan of investing in advanced network infrastructure solutions as we expand our footprint into new areas and begin to converge traditional and emerging technologies like ATM and MPLS for greater efficiency.”

"The DN 7 platform’s operational flexibility and ability to economically scale enable the delivery of commercially attractive services based on specific customer demand and service area density. This allows service providers like Red Eléctrica Telecomunicaciones to cost effectively enter new markets and grow revenue," said Nick Jeffery, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Ciena. "Red Eléctrica’s deployment of the DN 7 solution is yet another example of how Ciena is successfully applying to broadband data services its discipline of improving the economics of data service delivery and carving a path for seamless migration to next-generation converged networks.”

From a single platform, Ciena’s DN 7 product family can deliver native Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, Circuit Emulation Services and MPLS functionality. It allows service providers to protect and expand upon current Layer 2 investments and migrate services to MPLS-based converged networks. With industry-leading port density in a compact design, the DN 7 platform provides unmatched scalability for efficiently supporting subscriber growth, particularly versus traditional large chassis multiservice switches and routers. By enabling the evolution of existing data networks, the DN 7 solution improves the profitability of services while lowering the total cost of ownership.
