DAEGU BANK AND BUSAN BANK KOREA UTILIZE CIENA’S ONLINE METRO EQUIPMENT FOR DISASTER RECOVERY SYSTEM

Linthicum, MD — 04/02/2003

Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), a leading provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced that Daegu Bank and Busan Bank have jointly developed a back-up banking system utilizing Ciena’s ONLINE Metro™ Multiservice DWDM Transport Platform. Daegu Bank and Busan Bank are among the largest regional banking institutions in Korea.

Both banks’ primary data centers are interconnected with protected full-rate native Fibre Channel links to a back-up data center in Milyang city, 90 kilometers away. Utilizing dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology and storage area networking (SAN) protocols, the banks dramatically increased backup performance and assurance of business continuity.

“ By implementing a back-up system that assures business continuity for our mission–critical financial data, we can give our customers confidence that we are able to provide seamless, uninterrupted service and keep their data secure,” said Mr. Jo Seong-Tae, chief information officer of Daegu Bank. “We chose Ciena’s ONLINE solution because it provides us with a high density, high-bandwidth and intelligent data management solution capable of reaching long distances without the need for regeneration, SAN protocol conversion or data compression.”

Ciena’s ONLINE Metro enables flexible DWDM deployment of full-rate protected services including 1 and 2Gbps Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Video, ESCON, FICON, STM64, STM16, STM4, STM1 and the corresponding SONET services.

“ Daegu’s back-up system required optical connectivity between geographically distributed sites for protection of their data centers, without the costs associated with traditional carrier services,” said Kyu-Hwan Lee, general manager for Ciena Korea. “Ciena’s ONLINE Metro Transport solutions provide a robust and scalable network infrastructure that matched their needs for a cost-effective and reliable universal transport platform for efficient back-up performance.”
