T-Online Implements Ciena Technology to Support ADSL Network Across France

Ciena Boosts Capacity of T-Online’s Nationwide Optical Backbone with WDM Platform

Linthicum, MD — 06/08/2005

Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that T-Online, part of Deutsche Telekom, has selected its optical transport solutions as part of the operator’s comprehensive programme to expand its network infrastructure across France. Under the agreement, T-Online will deploy Ciena’s CoreStream™ Agility platform to deliver additional network capacity and enhanced performance to its Club Internet customers.

Ciena’s CoreStream Agility will provide greater levels of flexibility, bandwidth and reliability across T-Online’s purpose-built broadband (ADSL) network using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. The platform, based on open standards, will transport voice, video and data to T-Online’s customers in France, while lowering the overall cost of delivery for the operator.

“Our aim is to offer a highly flexible and scalable network to offer our subscribers high bandwidth applications – including voice, video and data – guaranteeing them the best possible levels of service. Ciena’s expertise and credentials in the optical transport marketplace, backed by the flexibility of the platform and responsiveness of the Ciena team, proved decisive factors for us,” explains Yvan Grignon, network director at T-Online.

“Ciena’s CoreStream Agility will support T-Online in its roll-out of an incomparable broadband network across France,” adds Eric Sèle, Ciena’s managing director for Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Our experience delivering application-focused solutions in high-growth areas such as broadband access, carrier-class Ethernet and, now, third generation wireless, in addition to our core networking market leadership is helping service providers such as T-Online add more flexibility to their networks to generate greater performance – and revenue – from their infrastructure.”

About Ciena’s CoreStream Agility

Part of Ciena’s FlexSelect™ Architecture, a standards-based, service-oriented network architecture made possible by flexible hardware, intelligent software and service-oriented network management, CoreStream Agility delivers agile WDM for new levels of network flexibility and efficiency by enabling rerouting of signals and reconfiguration of network traffic via software. Capable of routing 2.5 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit wavelengths, with migration to 40G wavelengths, for long-haul and ultra long-haul (ULH) network routes, CoreStream Agility also delivers an all-optical bypass to eliminate optical-electrical-optical (OEO) signal conversions and transceivers, allowing capital cost savings that grow as the network scales. Additionally, the system lowers ongoing operational costs by automating end-to-end service provisioning and management, inventory and resource tracking, dynamic power management, and channel-based intelligent digital performance monitoring for troubleshooting and supporting service level agreements.
