Ciena is committed to building quality connections within our communities.  Through multiple volunteer programs and events, our employees are able to share the inspired thinking, innovation, and drive that are inherent throughout their daily work life with people and organizations in need.  Ciena's outreach efforts continue to evolve as we constantly look for ways to positively impact the well-being of our communities.

Environmental, health and safety policy

Ciena seeks to operate its business in a manner that is environmentally responsible and protective of the health and safety of its employees and the public where our operations may have an impact. To further this goal, we have adopted the following principles which guide the conduct of our business as we strive to:

• Be Engaged – Our goal is to ensure that our employees are aware of environmental, health and safety issues that are important to them, our communities, our customers, and our stakeholders. All Ciena managers are responsible for ensuring employees are enabled to work in a safe manner and meet environmental concerns.  All Ciena employees are responsible for taking reasonable care to protect and preserve the environment and to enhance their safety, health and well-being and that of those around them including working in a manner that prevents injury.  Where appropriate, we provide information and training to help employees act in a responsible manner.


• Be Responsible – We operate our facilities in a manner that protects the environment, health and safety of our employees, our customers, and the communities in which we operate.   We endeavor to develop our products with due regard to the environment, including concerns relating to pollution prevention and conservation of energy and other resources.   We promote the adoption of these same principles by our contractors and suppliers.


• Be Proactive – We comply with relevant legislation and requirements related to the interaction of Ciena and the environment and applicable health and safety laws at every location we operate.  We review our environmental processes with particular emphasis on energy consumption and waste minimization.  Objectives of the entire system are set at the corporate and local levels.  The Environmental, Health and Safety program is periodically reviewed with an eye towards continual improvement.

Corporate governance and ethics

Ciena's management and Board of Directors believe that good corporate governance and high ethical standards are essential to the Company's long-term success. Accordingly, the Board has adopted a number of policies and procedures that are intended to assist it and the management to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
