Vietnam Telecoms National moves to 40G

VTN’s optical backbone network relies on Ciena’s ActivSpan Common Photonic Layer and ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform (if you haven’t heard about our new product branding learn about it here). The deployment expands VTN’s existing 10G network by four-fold, and takes advantage of coherent technology embedded in Ciena’s 40G solution. That means the upgrade involves little more than adding Ciena’s 40G transponder cards to their 6500 shelves, and requires no new equipment or re-engineering of existing fiber routes.

VTN’s move to add capacity addresses the need to keep pace with the nation’s dramatic rise in mobile and broadband traffic.  According to the latest stats from the ITU, the number of Internet users in Vietnam has more than doubled since 2005 to over 24 million users (or 27% of the population).  However, that pales in comparison to the rapid growth of mobile subscribers.  By some estimates, the number of total mobile subscribers is close to equaling or surpassing Vietnam’s total population of 89 million.

For Ciena, the VTN news means that Ciena now has more than 60 deployments worldwide for its 40G/100G coherent solution.
