Industry recognizes Ciena 100G technology innovation

As technology goes, taking 100G optical networking from idea to reality is one of those true innovation milestones.  R&D Magazine apparently agrees, making Ciena’s leadership in 100G innovation one of its R&D 100 Award winners.  R&D Magazine's 48th Annual R&D 100 Awards honor the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace during the past year.

Winners were selected by an independent judging panel and the magazine’s editors. What’s most impressive about the he R&D 100 Award is that it doesn’t focus on just telecommunications, but across industry sectors as diverse as high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology.

Ciena was recognized for the development and productization of the world's first 100G coherent optical solution, including the development of several key technologies such as coherent detection, electronic dispersion compensation and Dual-Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP-QPSK) modulation.  In fact, Ciena holds more than 20 patents related to its work in 100G optical transmission.  Since its introduction, Ciena has announced multiple 100G trials and deployments (including the news last week that TelstraClear is the latest to trial Ciena’s 100G solution) while others in the industry have followed Ciena’s technology path for 100G.

As an aside, R&D Magazine’s announcement of the new award winners includes an interesting list of past winners, including the automated teller machine (1973), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the Nicoderm anti-smoking patch (1992), Taxol anticancer drug (1993), and HDTV (1998).
