Ciena and Fibertech help connect Connecticut to 4G LTE

4G LTE users in Connecticut may soon notice a difference in how fast their streaming video and other high-bandwidth applications perform thanks to Ciena and Fibertech Networks.  Fibertech, a provider of metro-based fiber optic network services in the eastern and central U.S., is teaming with Ciena on a project to build out a wireless backhaul network across the state of Connecticut.

The project, which will address the backhaul needs of a mobile operator providing 4G LTE mobile service in the state, will connect 250 cell towers with fiber to enable 10Gbps speeds and leverage Cairier Ethernet technology (see the press release here).

Underlying the network is Ciena's Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery (CESD) portfolio, including Ciena’s 5410 and 5150 Service Aggregation Switches, and 3930 Service Delivery Switches, as well as ongoing support from Ciena Specialist Services.

The news comes at a time when much of the industry will be gathering in Chicago for 4G World, one of the world's largest conferences focused on mobile broadband.  Much of the talk at 4G World will be around issues similar to those being addressed with the new network in Connecticut, including the ongoing explosion of mobile bandwidth usage in an increasingly smartphone addicted world.

In fact, a recent study found that mobile data traffic increased 77% in the first half of 2011, with streaming video extending its lead as the top bandwidth hog (see below chart).

Ciena will be at 4G World as well this week, with a booth (#807) and several conference speaking sessions (see the list in today's press release).  If all goes to plan, we'll be covering the event here on the blog with updates and pictures from the show.
