AquaComms’ Greg Varisco teams with Ciena to design a differentiated submarine offering

When Greg Varisco, COO of Dublin-based AquaComms, was conceptualizing a trans-Atlantic submarine cable business, he envisioned a network that would stand apart from the crowd. In an industry where infrastructure is in place for decades, he saw an opportunity to leapfrog existing submarine offerings by building a next-generation network that would be better suited for the needs of fast-growing web-scale content providers, in addition to telecom service providers. And when your job is to ensure that global clouds are continuously connected, it is critical to choose the right partner for network strategy and technology.

Building better offerings... together

Fortunately, early in the process, Greg and the team at AquaComms connected with Ian Clarke, a submarine network specialist at Ciena. Greg and Ian soon formed a close working relationship on everything from designing a highly differentiated GeoMesh network to product strategy and even joint pre-sales—all directly targeting a fast-emerging business opportunity with customers who have massive amounts of data to protect and move across oceans. According to research firm TeleGeography, the volume of trans-Atlantic data is expected to grow at a 40%+ CAGR through 2021.
